Report Shows a 15% Decline in Card Payment Fraud, But How Long Will It Last?

While overall percentages of online fraud continue to climb, one of our partners in fighting cyber crime, Retail Decisions (ReD), reported that card payment fraud in the UK dropped an estimated 15% last year. According to the article, “ReD Estimates a 15% Drop in UK Card Payment Fraud in 2009,” the value of online, mail order and telephone order fraud dipped to GBP278 million in 2009 from GBP328 million in 2008.

Retail Decisions CEO, Carl Clump, credits innovations in fraud prevention technologies for the estimated 15% decline over the past year. This defied the trend where overall CNP (card not present) fraud losses have grown consistently over the past five years. Despite the total drop in losses, Clump was quick to point out that the current trend, which would continue well into 2010, may not be here to stay. (more…)


Video Game Consoles are Hot Commodity for Fraudsters

If you’re curious to know what’s topping people’s wish lists this holiday season, just take a look at online sales. No big surprise, electronics are where it’s at. Based on information provided by fraud prevention experts (and iovation partner) Retail Decisions (ReD), the top-ten list of products sold online during Black Friday was dominated by GPS systems, televisions, digital cameras and video game consoles.

Besides providing statistics on what online purchases people were spending their hard-earned money on during Black Friday, ReD also noted that online criminals were out in force, busy spending other people’s money. “Whilst online retailers witnessed a huge upturn in sales this Black Friday, fraudsters are also ‘spending’ more, with an average value of $248 per transaction online, 23% more than the average genuine customer,” said ReD’s CEO, Carl Clump.
